How to Check your Headlights

Your headlights are one of the most important parts of your vehicle especially when you are driving at night. Your eyes will depend on how much you can see in front of you. If your headlights are busted or filthy, then your chances of getting into an accident are sky high.

Clean and properly working headlights are crucial to every driver. Over time, certain elements including the sun, rain, salt, and road grime can affect the function of your lights. This is why it is crucial that you keep them regularly maintained.

Here are some tips on how to keep your headlights working properly.

  1. Check the alignment

Turn on the headlights and observe if it is properly aligned. There are instances when your lights are off balance or they aren’t straight as they should be. Make sure you properly align both bulbs so that it can light your way properly.

Some cars have headlights that are easy to adjust. In some cases where your housing must be replaced, let your mechanic work on it. Make sure you park your car in a flat level area so that your view is straight and balanced.

  1. Clean your headlights.

Keep the glasses or lenses free from dirt, oil, and debris. Since you are always using your car in various environmental and weather conditions, your headlights are more exposed to road elements.

  • Remove the damaged bulb. Remove the bulb connector by unscrewing the metal or plastic tab using pliers. Take out the retainer, remove the connector and change the bulb.
  • Clean the retainer. Use a clean rag to wipe off dirt from the retainer.
  • Install the new bulb. Insert the new bulb into place and put back the retainer into the vehicle.
